GAME ESSENTIALS: 49ers (2-0) vs. Packers (1-1) at Levi’s Stadium, Sunday, 5:20 p.m., NBC (Ch. 11), Announcers: Al Michaels (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (color commentary), Michele Tafoya (sideline reporter). ODDS: 49ers -3 (as of Friday afternoon).

For the fourth time in the last three years, the Packers are coming to Santa Clara to play the 49ers on national television.

The 49ers won the first two of those bouts, including the NFC Championship to reach Super Bowl LIV, but the Packers routed them on Thursday Night Football last season (and lead the all-time series 37-32-1).

Reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers’ story has been told each time, so we’ll just give you the highlights: He’s from Chico, he rooted for the Niners as a child, and he’s very good at football. This year, there’s the added nugget that he spent all offseason angry at the Packers, but they refused to trade him.

Rodgers struggled mightily in Green Bay’s opening loss to the Saints but looked more like himself on Monday Night Football last week against the Lions in a Packers home win. h2 data-curated-ids="" data-relation-type="automatic-primary-section"">

The Niners come in fresh off a two-game sweep to open the season in Detroit and Philadelphia, though there were shaky stretches in both games (fourth quarter vs. the Lions and first half vs. the Eagles).

They are also pretty banged up. After losing No. 1 running back Raheem Mostert and No. 1 cornerback Jason Verrett for the season in the opener, they lost running backs Nos. 2-4 (Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty, Trey Sermon) at times last week. As of Friday afternoon, it looks likely that Sermon will be available Sunday night, but Hasty is out and Mitchell is doubtful.

Follow along with our reporters Cam Inman and Jerry McDonald, columnist Dieter Kurtenbach and other analysts providing their thoughts about the Niners’ opener.
