Alix Klineman

Manhattan Beach native and Olympian Alix Klineman and her partner, April Ross, dropped by the city’s beach volleyball courts Thursday, Aug. 19, to thank Supervisor Janice Hahn and local police for keeping the courts open during the summer.

Klineman and three-time Olympic medalist Ross snagged the gold in the women’s beach volleyball competition at Tokyo 2020. Klineman and Ross defeated Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy of Australia at Shiokaze Park near Tokyo Bay.

What helped pave the way to their victory, Klineman said, was the ability to practice at her hometown’s beach courts.

While beaches remained open the entire summer, they were temporarily closed in 2020 at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic delayed the Summer Olympics from last year to 2021 and still cast a pall over much of the games.

Hahn, Hermosa Beach Chief of Police Paul LeBaron and other first responders praised the pair for their victory on the world stage — grateful to have helped in anyway they could.

“I was glad to have played even the tiniest part in April and Alix’s gold medal victory,” Hahn said. “They have made us all so proud and have become such inspirations to young women athletes.”

Hahn presented Klineman and Ross with congratulatory certificates from the Los Angles County Board of Supervisors and, in turn, the duo happily autographed volleyballs and showed off their gold medals.

The two Olympians will be in town again this weekend for the AVP Manhattan Beach Open. The pair won the Manhattan Beach Open in 2018 and came in second behind Canadians Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan in 2019.
