The 50 Best Reasons To Live In New Jersey

By Alan Medvin

Dear Kyrie,

When you stated that you wouldn’t be vaccinated for COVID-19 back in October, the reasons you gave were that you did not believe in vaccine mandates and that remaining unvaccinated was “about doing what’s best” for you. But that raises a couple of questions that I truly hope you’ll answer.

But first, let me just tell you a bit about me. You grew up in West Orange, so like you, I’m a Jersey guy. Unlike you, I’m pretty old. I’ll be 75 on my next birthday. And I’ve followed your career ever since you were a teammate of one of my best friend’s sons when you played for Montclair Kimberley Academy.

In November of 2020, I signed up to participate in a clinical trial for one of the vaccines. There were two reasons. First, I admittedly did it for myself, figuring that a 50-50 chance of getting the real shot instead of saltwater (the placebo) was worth it. But I also did it because COVID-19 was devastating to seniors back then, and it was devastating to the poor as well, particularly in communities of color. You see, I worked in Newark for my entire professional life, more than 40 years. Was I afraid? Not one bit. I trusted the scientists and the rigor of the extensive animal studies that had been done before the first human got stuck.

So I got jabbed in early December of 2020, and to be honest, I was certain that I had gotten the placebo because I had no reaction at all, not even a sore arm. Study participants were told, once the first vaccines received emergency use authorization, that we should make appointments to be vaccinated if we could, to notify the study team of the appointment date and we’d be unblinded the day before the appointment was scheduled. When I was told that I had gotten the real deal, I was both shocked and elated.

But now, back to you. Let’s start with mandates. I’m sure you know that in order to attend school, your parents were required to provide proof that you had been vaccinated to prevent many illnesses such as polio, measles, mumps and chickenpox to name a few. So mandates aren’t exactly a new thing.

So the real question is

why do you think it’s “best for you” to remain unvaccinated? Is it out of fear, fear likely based on much of the misinformation that’s floating around out there? Have you discussed the subject with any of your doctors? Have any of them told you that in their opinion it is “best for you” to not get the vaccine? Or, have they advised you to get the vaccine, advice you’ve chosen to ignore? Is it “best for you” to put your teammates at risk, as well as your fellow NBA competitors? And is it “best for you” to significantly increase the likelihood that you’ll become seriously ill, perhaps even fatally ill, if you do contract COVID while unvaccinated.

Kyrie, when it comes to making significant decisions, most people try to accumulate facts

and then let those facts, and not gut feelings, guide them in their decision. So what facts are you relying on with respect to your decision to remain unvaccinated?

Please Kyrie, I really want to know, and I’m not the only one. Like it or not, people listen to you. You’re what they call an “influencer.” Last time I checked, you had over 4.3 million followers on Twitter, and I bet many of them would like to know, too.

Why do you think this decision is “best for you?”
