Former Manchester City left-back Michael Ball has admitted that he would like to see his former club make a move for Atalanta and Germany defender Robin Gosens.
City, who finalised their pre-season preparations with a 4-1 win over Championship side Blackpool at the Academy Stadium on Tuesday evening, have completed just one signing so far this summer — the permanent addition of goalkeeper Scott Carson.
However, the Etihad Stadium outfit, who will travel to Wembley this weekend to lock horns with Leicester City in the FA Community Shield, are hoping to soon increase that tally to two with the signing of Aston Villa star Jack Grealish.
City have tabled a £100million bid for the England international and are hopeful that it will be enough to lure the midfield architect to Manchester.
But while City's fans are desperate to see manager Pep Guardiola add attacking talent to his ranks this summer, former City defender Ball — who played for the club between 2007 and 2009 — would like to see the City chief bolster his defensive options with the signing of Gosens.
The 27-year-old, who claimed one goal and one assist at Euro 2020, has established himself as one of the best left-backs in Europe in the last couple of seasons, sparking links with Premier League clubs including Chelsea.
On Gosens, Ball told The Transfer Tavern : "He could fit right in and has got massive experience. That would be a no-brainer for me if Manchester City want to bring him in.
"He could come straight into the team, provide extra competition for the guys already there and he is also better than what they had last season.
"I think a lot of opposition teams know the full-back areas, especially on the left side, is a weak link if Manchester City have one.
"A guy with Gosens’ experience, right in his prime, would be perfect."
City are currently well-stocked at left-back with both Benjamin Mendy, who has started all three of Guardiola's side's pre-season outings, and Oleksandr Zinchenko battling it out for the starting berth.
